These position(s) are new positions; they do not reflect turnover of existing staff and are meant to provide support for our current operations and for some exciting upcoming business expansions, of which news in due course. We are in no hurry to hire and are willing, if necessary, to spend months locating and hiring suitable & temperamentally kindred candidates.

The successful candidates will:

• Be comfortable taking on any role in the business, which might involve, on any given day, moving 100+ 40 lb. boxes; shelving or pricing books for an entire 8 hour shift; breaking down the cardboard recycling; working the cash desk; building shelves; cleaning; transferring stock between branches, etc.

• Work 40 hours per week. These are full time positions. Please do not apply if what you really want is a part time gig or side hustle; our unique and somewhat idiosyncratic business model doesn’t really do part-time, and we’re unable to consider candidates who’re unable to work 40 hours (5 weekly 8 hour shifts) a week.

• Not currently be attending college or university full time, or planning to within two or three years. We ask for a minimum 1 year commitment, and a longer period is strongly preferred. Almost all of our current staff have been with us for 5+ years!

• Be available for a variety of shifts, including mornings, evenings, and weekends at all three of our locations. A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is preferred but not required.

• Possess good practical intelligence, and the ability to work quickly and multitask under pressure. The jobs involve a lot of physical and mental activity, and are best compared to fast-paced restaurant work. Those interested in standing behind a cash desk socializing and/or being paid to read will not be a good fit with us. There’s lots of physical activity, in an often cluttered and hectic environment. Those expecting a calm environment where job responsibilities don’t really change from day to day, or a white-collar office job that involves tranquil desk work & lots of time to write memos, develop org charts, etc. will also not be a good fit for these positions.

• Be client-focused. Each time we hire we invariably interview folks who know lots about books, but very little about client service, and even less about sales. We can teach our retail systems to almost anyone, but can't teach empathy and good judgment, which are more elusive components of character, and highly prized around here.

• Previous book-related experience is helpful but not required. Almost all of our current staff came to us with no previous bookselling experience of any kind.

• Have a wide familiarity with contemporary literary fiction and non-fiction.

• Already possess an undergraduate degree or equivalent work history.
• Bring other skills and abilities to the table. Examples: social media (Twitter; Instagram); basic accounting and/or bookkeeping skills; carpentry; HTML; SQL, PHP & MYSQL coding experience, etc.

We offer competitive compensation of $21-$26/hr depending on experience and specific job responsibilities, paid vacation in excess of what BC labor standards require, and a vibrant, entrepreneurial work environment.

To apply for these positions, please forward a detailed resume to pulpbook@gmail.com.

Please, NO phone calls, non-resume email queries, or walk-in requests for employment.

We thank all applicants for your interest, but may not, depending on resume volume, be able to reply everyone.
All 3 of our shops remain OPEN for the foreseeable future, absent a "shelter in place" order from the city, province, or feds.

Please note that our hours have changed effective 3/21/2020, until further notice:

Main Street 10am-7pm Mon-Sat, Sun 11am-7pm
Kits 11am-7pm Mon-Sun
Commercial Drive 11am-7pm Mon-Sun

We are sanitizing highly trafficked surfaces (door handles; debit
machine pinpads, etc.), & not permitting more than 10 clients at a
time in each location.

We are still actively buying and trading books at Main Street and
Commercial Drive. We are NOT currently buying at our Kits location.

Some folks may not want to come into the shop(s), but would still like
to pick up books! We can take orders by phone (604.876.4311), email (pulpbook@gmail.com) or twitter (@pfbvan), and are mailing out and delivering packages every day.

$50+ at once gets free delivery anywhere from Pemberton to Hope, and we
are happy to try to work smaller orders into our full time delivery
driver's schedule at no additional charge.

I have also been asked, "What happens if you are legally required to
close?" If we're closed we're closed, along with everyone else for the
duration of a legal closure, although in practice we will probably be
around Main Street at least a few hours a day to answer email, take
orders, prepare orders for delivery, & etc.

I think it is also important to mention that our staff will be paid, to
the best of my ability, through any business closure, & not laid off
en masse. This is a moral, not legal requirement; I feel that
this is the least I can do for the very talented and hard working folks
who have chosen, for better or for worse, to join their fortunes with
mine.

Please contact me directly if you have questions; I am almost always around.

Best,

booksellers in August 2019.

The successful candidates will:

• Work 40 hours per week. These are full time positions.

• Not currently be attending college or university full time, or planning to within two or three years.

• Be available for a variety of shifts, including mornings, evenings, and weekends at all three of our shops.

• Possess good practical intelligence, and the ability to work quickly
and multitask under pressure. The jobs involve a lot of physical and
mental activity, and are best compared to fast-paced
restaurant work. Those interested in standing behind a cash desk
socializing and/or being paid to read will not be a good fit with us.

• Be client-focused. Each time we hire we invariably interview folks
who know lots about books, but very little about client service, and
even less about sales. We can teach our retail systems to almost
anyone, but can't teach empathy and good judgment, which are more
elusive components of character, and highly prized around here.

• Have previous customer service or supervisory experience. Previous
book-related experience is preferred but not required. Some of our best staff came to us with no previous bookselling experience of any kind.

• Have a wide familiarity with contemporary literary fiction and non-fiction.

• Already possess an undergraduate degree or equivalent work history.

• Bring other skills and abilities to the table. Examples: social media
(Twitter; Blogger); basic accounting and/or bookkeeping skills;
carpentry; HTML; SQL, PHP & MYSQL coding experience, etc.

We offer competitive compensation and a vibrant, entrepreneurial work environment.

To apply for these positions, please forward a detailed resume to pulpbook@gmail.com, or drop a resume off at any of our locations. Please, NO phone calls, non-resume email queries, or walk-in requests for employment.

We thank all applicants for your interest, but may not, depending on resume volume, be able to reply to everyone.cjbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11862879837362584251noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-715479316539623029.post-89550106208909734162017-10-19T14:39:00.002-07:002017-10-19T14:39:35.905-07:00PFB Events, October/November 2017: Jen Agg; Lynn Johnston

Winter looks to be coming to an end, at least up at Main and Broadway.
and we've lined up a variety of events for the remainder of the month,
including one next week that will be standing-room only:

Next Saturday, 18 February, from 7 to 9pm, we're pleased to welcome Lawrence Weschler to Vancouver. Weschler is a writer of creative nonfiction and 20+ year veteran of the New Yorker
whose work encompasses visual-art criticism and in-depth profiles of
figures like Robert Irwin, David Hockney, J.S.G. Boggs, and David Hildebrand Wilson and Diana Drake Wilson, co-founders of LA's Museum of Jurassic Technology.

On the 18th, Weschler will read from, and discuss, his latest book, Waves Passing in the Night: Walter Murch in the Land of the Astrophysicists

other love, astrophysics, and, specifically, "the rehabilitation of
Titius-Bode, a long-discredited 18th century theory regarding the
patterns by which planets and moons array themselves in gravitational
systems across the universe."

This event will be 100% packed out! Admission is free, as is box wine
& the deli tray, but I definitely suggest early arrival if you don't
want to be standing halfway down the aisle. And thanks to our friend Genevieve Fuji Johnson, for arranging Lawrence Weschler's visit.

On Thursday, 23 February, from 7 to 9pm, our friend Robin Bougie
launches the 10th anniversary edition of his extreme cinema zine, Cinema Sewer,
at Main Street. Leave the kids at home, but come for chips, free wine,
zines, and a variety of shock- & smut- related merch and door
prizes.

followed by a short question-and-answer session and the cusomary
freebie wine. Things get going around 7pm and should wrap up by 9pm.

On Wednesday 2 November, PFB owner Chris Brayshaw will be co-interviewing graphic novelist and journalist Joe Sacco down at SFU Woodwards.

On Thursday 3 November, we're selling books at a private event for novelist Patrick Taylor (An Irish Country Doctor, & etc.). If you would like a signed copy of one of his in print works, please let us know!

On Friday 4 November, our friend Clint Burnham has organized a reading by American poet Rodrigo Toscano, which starts around 7pm at Main Street.
After all this activity, a break for a week or two, and then on Wednesday 23 November poets Danielle LaFrance and Anahita Jamali Rad, co-editors of the feminist literary journal About a Bicycle, will join us at Main Street at 7pm to read from their latest collections, both published by our friends at Talonbooks.

That's it for events this month.

As usual, a few staff picks and recent client favorites round thinsg
out. Not a book club, just titles we're currently reading and enjoying:

Katherena Vermette's The Break
Finally, December is fast approaching. A gentle reminder that things
will soon become completely mental over here, and that extra savings are
often available on books in return for a slightly longer wait. If your
Xmas / Hanukkah / pagan winter festival
gift list includes books, give us a holler by late November, and avoid
being stuck behind the guy who desperately needs a signed first edition
of the Hobbit on December 23rd (which sounds like a
joke, but we have taken this exact frantic request once or twice each
December for the last 16.5 years)!cjbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11862879837362584251noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-715479316539623029.post-66434521997852382142016-05-31T11:07:00.002-07:002016-05-31T11:08:08.439-07:00PFB Events: June 2016<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

Tomorrow, Wednesday June 1st, Olympia writer Jim Lynch visits Main Street from 7 to 9pm to read from his new novel Before the Wind. Lynch's lyrical Pacific Northwest family sagas have earned comparison to everything from Ken Kesey's Sometimes a Great Notion to Steinbeck's Cannery Row, & his previous novel The Highest Tide has been a perennial PFB bestseller since its release in 2005.

Nothing special is planned for Sunday June 12th, which is PFB's 16th
anniversary. Always kind of a surprise when the date rolls around; it
feels more like a very busy eight or twelve weeks, but the calendar
& my brow furrows apparently think otherwise.

On Thursday, June 16th, our good friend Sam Wiebe, author of the terrific debut Vancouver-based noir novel Last of the Independents, which many crime-loving PFB regulars read & enjoyed, launches his second novel, Invisible Dead, at Main Street from 7 to 9pm. This launch will be very busy; if you want a seat, plan to arrive by 6:30 or so.

On Friday, June 17th, PFB's third-ever customer, SFU's Clint Burnham,
will be in house from 7-9pm to read from his new collection of poems, Pound @ GuntAnamo. Clint will be joined by special guest reader/performers Jordan Abel and Shazia Hafiz Ramji.

As always, these events are free and open to the public. Most have free box wine and/or snacks.

Finally, two miscellaneous notes:

1. Our friends at the SFU library are bringing perennial PFB bestseller Maggie Nelson (Bluets; The Argonauts)
to Vancouver in January 2017! Still a ways off, but we are obviously
stoked by the prospect of a free Maggie Nelson lecture at SFU Woodwards,
and several days of events on Burnaby Mountain! More details in the
fall.

2. Question #1 at the desk: "What are the regulars reading?" We're not
Oprah and this isn't our book club, but a few recent titles that have
been mega-popular among folks we're on a first-name basis with include:

Leanne Simpson, Islands of Decolonial Love

Elena Ferrante, The Neapolitan Quartet

Lindy West, Shrill (coming soon to our friends across the street at the Fox!)

Paul Lazenby, When We Were Bouncers

Olivia Laing, The Lonely City: Adventures in the Art of Being Alone
Thanks for reading this far!
Please join us at PFB Main Street on Friday 19 February, 7-9pm, for a special performance by American spoken word superstar Sarah Kay.

Main Street's front room fits over a hundred people without difficulty, as we learned from Eileen Myles' November visit to the shop, but seating is limited; if you would like a seat or have difficulty standing, please plan to arrive between 6-630pm.

We will have copies of Kay's B and The Type available for sale, even though The Type's release date is technically March 1st.
Thrilled to announce we'll be attending Rebecca Solnit's EMMA Talk on Wednesday 17 February from 7-9pm at SFU Woodwards, along with all of her in-print publications. The event has been sold out for a few months now, but there will probably be at least a few rush tickets available at the door.

Rebecca Solnit is one of the very first authors we carried when we started adding new books to inventory a decade ago, & we're looking forward to finally meeting her in person. Everyone keeps asking us for a best-of-the-year list. We're not Oprah and this isn't our book club, but here's some titles enjoyed by PFB staff and regulars in 2015, not all of which were published in 2015. Go figure! If I hadn't worked 100+ hours this week I might be amiable to a longer exegesis; as it is, names, title(s) & you're on your own, or drop in & we'll bend your ear.
Please join Pemberton author Katherine Fawcett tomorrow night, Thursday June 25, from 7-9pm, as she reads from her debut collection of short fiction, The Little Washer of Sorrows.

Excellent review of the book over @ NPR:

"Fawcett lets her speculative side run wild. Like fellow fabulist
Kelly Link — not to mention forebears such as Donald Barthleme — she
finds fertile ground in the fuzzy territory between realism and
surrealism. In 'BLK MGC,' a ripped-from-the-headlines pyramid scheme
takes a left turn somewhere near The Twilight Zone; in 'The
Anniversary Present,' an aging Mother Earth is addicted to beauty
products while her husband, Father Time, has adulterous feelings for
Sister Moon.

Domesticity plays as big a part in Fawcett's story
as science fiction, fantasy, and mythology do. The tenderly combative
interplay between the married couple in 'Lenny and the Polyamphibians' —
which only intensifies when a mermaid enters into the equation — is
poignantly layered, even as it sparks with snark. The couple in Little Washer's
title story, on the other hand, are haunted by the most prosaic of
monsters: Bankruptcy. As their estate manager begins to exhibit
supernatural qualities, though, the balance of reality gets turned on
its side."cjbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11862879837362584251noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-715479316539623029.post-87352501099132969772015-05-14T12:50:00.000-07:002015-05-14T12:54:14.734-07:00May 2015 events @ PFB
That promotion was wildly successful, resulting in special order prices below those offered by our Monopolistic Online Competitor, and new book sales way out ahead of anything we have ever seen before.

Starting today, and continuing until further notice, almost all new hardcovers in the shops will be sold at 30% off Canadian cover price. Most, but not all hardcovers special ordered from Canadian suppliers will be sold at 37%-40% off Canadian cover price.

Once again, thanks to everyone who finds value in our work, and to those who prefer to shop in, and support, the communities where they work or live. cjbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11862879837362584251noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-715479316539623029.post-12530526158065316192014-12-27T18:47:00.001-08:002014-12-27T19:10:27.207-08:00Now Hiring: Full Time BooksellerPulpfiction Books, Vancouver’s largest independent bookstore, seeks a mature, enthusiastic individual interested in joining us as a full time bookseller in late January or early February 2015.

The successful candidate will:

• Work a full 40 hours per week. This is a full time position.

• Not currently be attending college or university full time, or plan to within two to three years.

• Be available for a variety of shifts, including mornings, evenings, and weekends at all three of our locations.

• Possess good practical intelligence, and the ability to work quickly and multitask under pressure. The job involves a lot of physical and mental activity, and is best compared to fast-paced warehouse or restaurant work. Those interested in standing behind a cash desk socializing and/or being paid to read will not be a good fit with us.

• Be client-focused. Every time we hire we invariably interview someone who knows lots about books, but very little about client service, and even less about sales. We can teach our retail systems to almost anyone, but we can't teach empathy and good judgment, which are more elusive components of character, and highly prized around here.

• Have previous customer service or supervisory experience. Previous book-related experience is preferred but not required. Some of our most valuable staff came to us with no previous bookselling experience.

• Have a wide familiarity with contemporary literary fiction and non-fiction.

• Already possess an undergraduate degree or equivalent work history.

• Bring other skills and abilities to the table. Examples: social media (Twitter; Blogger); basic accounting and/or bookkeeping skills; carpentry; HTML; SQL, PHP & MYSQL coding experience, etc. etc. etc.

We offer competitive compensation and a vibrant, entrepreneurial work environment.

To apply for this position, please forward a detailed resume to pulpbook@gmail.com. Please, NO phone calls, non-resume email queries, or walk-in requests for employment.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but may, depending on resume volume, not be able to reply to everyone.cjbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11862879837362584251noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-715479316539623029.post-56829868051224566662014-10-23T10:49:00.001-07:002014-10-23T10:51:30.658-07:00What's News @ PFB -- Late October 2014

1. Cheap graphic novels, complimentary snack foods & inexpensive but tasty Chilean wine. If you're in the neighborhood, drop by.

We started carrying new books a year or two into our now approximately fourteen-and-a-half year run. The big title back then was Yann Martel's Life of Pi, and what seemed like dozens of people a day would drop into the old shop at 2418 Main to ask for it. My standard reply -- "No, it's too recent for us to have used, you should go buy it new at [LOCAL INDEPENDENT DISCOUNT BOOKSTORE] down the road" -- felt dumb, especially with all the repetition. Some people thanked me for the information and headed off, never to be seen again. Others said something like, "I support you and I want to buy it here. I don't care if it's new or used."

Enough of this, and even I got the message. We opened a wholesale account and brought in a few Life of Pis, plus half a dozen other titles, and sold them at full price, tax off. Sales weren't anything to cheer about, but all the original books eventually sold and we ordered some more, plus a few additional titles with what profit we made from order #1.

A few years of this, and the front room was full of new books. We went to 20% off on almost everything, then, a year or two later, added a two-tier discount -- 20% off in-shop/30% off prepaid special orders -- and sales abruptly went through the roof.

We -- despite me still thinking of us as the tiny neighborhood bookstore that could -- are now receiving extra discounts from most of our suppliers based on our sales volumes, which are substantial. So, as a "Thank you" to everyone who ordered from us in the early days, and then waited patiently for their books to arrive while we worked out "systems," I'm going to try an additional experiment, starting this week and running through Christmas.

Most, but not all, $30+ cover price hardcovers in all of our three locations are now 30% off in-shop, & 40% off if ordered directly from their publishers, which adds a few days to the special order process. I'm curious to see what this does to our volumes and the sort of titles ordered in. Again, this is an experiment, and I reserve the right to cancel or modify it at any time. But it should make for an interesting next few months.cjbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11862879837362584251noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-715479316539623029.post-52099176990837017002013-08-28T11:20:00.002-07:002013-08-28T16:29:00.771-07:00Kim Stanley Robinson Reads & Signs @ Main Street
